+ BIO

Sebastian Thiel is a writer, director, and producer. Born in Zambia and raised in North West London, Sebastian is one of the UK’s hottest rising stars behind the camera, having directed dramas for BBC, ITV, Amazon Prime and Netflix. Inspired by living in London, Sebastian started his own production company, Upshot Entertainment, at the age of 17 with an ambition to create the content that he wanted to see: content that was vastly underrepresented - fronted and made by black talent. Sebastian made his TV debut in 2014 on London Live with his documentary Trap Town and has since built an online following amassing over 13 million views for his self-produced work on his YouTube channel. Created, written and directed by Sebastian, his first drama Just A Couple, about a couple in a distinctly modern relationship, started life as a YouTube series before being picked up by Big Talk Productions for BBC Three.

Sebastian went on to direct the International Emmy-nominated BBC Three comedy Dreaming Whilst Black, and the recent hit ITVX and Amazon Prime drama Riches. Most recently, Sebastian directed Supacell, a new forthcoming superhero drama set in London for Netflix. Sebastian continues to produce content through Upshot Entertainment, a subset of which produces professional and dynamic showreels, under Upshot Reels, for some of Britain’s greatest talent including Letitia Wright (Black Panther, Small Axe). He is also the founder of Dope Black Art, which is dedicated to championing black culture through visual art. Sebastian has featured on TEDx Talks, was listed in the Evening Standard’s Top 25 Under 25 most influential Londoners and was included on the BBC’s 2017 Hotlist for New Talent – unveiled by Idris Elba and Tony Hall. Most recently, Sebastian was recognised by Broadcast magazine on their 2022 ‘Hot Shots’ list, which recognises rising talent in the television industry. Sebastian is currently writing a film and a number of TV shows. Sebastian is represented by Cathy King at 42 , and is signed to WME agency in LA.

100% of all Donations go to The Louis Dundas Centre for Palliative Care at Great Ormond Street Hospital

+ BIO

Fergus had a 20-year background in documentary as a producer/director and executive producer at BBC Studios before making the move to drama. In the documentary genre he was twice nominated for a BAFTA and won a Royal Television Society (RTS) award for his series STEPHEN FRY:OUT THERE (BBC).

He began directing drama in 2017 with his film AGAINST THE LAW which he developed from the book of the same name and then collaborated with writer Brian Fillis to bring to screen. The 70-minute film blends drama with moments of documentary testimony from gay men who spoke personally on the themes of persecution addressed in the drama. The film was nominated for two BAFTA awards for Best Single Drama and Best Cinematography.

Fergus’s second film, MOTHER’S DAY, was based on his extensive research and interviews with the real-life characters at the heart of the drama. The single drama was nominated for an RTS Best Drama award and won the BANFF Best TV Movie Award.

Recognising that the next obvious step in his career would be to direct a primetime TV drama, Fergus landed Lead Director on season 3 of THE A WORD (BBC/Keshet/Sundance) written by Peter Bowker. His work on this attracted the attention of writer and showrunner, Sally Wainwright, who invited Fergus to direct the concluding 3 episodes of GENTLEMAN JACK (S2) (BBC/HBO). So impressed with Fergus’s storytelling, Wainwright then invited him to direct the final ever episodes of her hit show HAPPY VALLEY (S3) (BBC/AMC). His episodes were the most watched of all UK drama in 2023. To date, the show has won the National TV Award (NTA) for Best Drama Series, several RTS awards including Best Series, and the Rose D’or for Best Performance of the Year by Sarah Lancashire.

Fergus has just completed work as Lead Director on THE TOURIST (S2) for BBC1 in the UK, Stan in Australia and Netflix for the US market.

Get an Insight into the Process of Casting Director Sophie Pearson!

Sophie has been working in the casting industry for 6 years. She started out working as a casting associate at Hubbard Casting with Ros and John Hubbard, where she worked on films such as 'Journey's End', 'Hurricane' and 'The More You Ignore Me'.

She now works with Des Hamilton and has most recently worked on projects such as Nextflix's 'The King', 'Top Boy Series 3' and 'Jojo Rabbit’.

Des Hamilton is a Glasgow born, London based, Casting Director. He’s worked in film and television for over twenty years, and recently won a BAFTA for Best Casting on Top Boy (this being the first time scripted casting was recognised as a category).

His career began in 2001 when fellow Glaswegian Lynne Ramsay asked him to find a non-actress to play the co-lead opposite Samantha Morton in Morvern Callar. Des went on to cast the whole film, famously street casting Kathleen McDermott, who went on to win a BAFTA for Best Newcomer.

He’s predominantly known for his work on Jojo Rabbit, Four Lions, The King, Bullet Boy, and Claire Denis’ High Life.  But it’s his interest in projects regardless of budget or size, as well as his willingness to work with new directors, that sets him apart.

Des and his team have continued to cast via a combination of traditional methods (theatrical agents, drama schools, etc.) and from the street; most notably casting Thomas Turgoose in This is England.
